Fire by Zach Hamman

I came in to town on October 30th. The day of Halloween and also the 5 year anniversary of my house being destroyed by fire. Those haunting memories still effect me to this day. It's especially hard not to think about it when your in the town that it happened in. At least I was going to be with my cousins though. They would help me get my mind off of the topic.

I was greeted at the door by my cousins when I arrived. It was really good seeing them after I have been gone for 5 years. I always have fun with them to from what I remember. We did things that we used to do when we were kids like, play a game of football, or go to the pool. Stuff like that. The whole day, I didn't even think about my house or anything. Until nightfall came. My cousins had kids of their own, so they wanted to take them out trick or treating while I watched the house. Night time had always been the worst time of day for me but I didn't want the kids not going trick or treating so I stayed home alone. While I was there, I tried to not do anything risky because the memories started to come back to me. I started to really get scared because our neighbors were making a bonfire and setting off fireworks like it was the 4th of July. The fireworks didn't seem like they would stop. It went on for about 30 minutes, then they finally stopped. The bonfire was never put out though. I tried to get rid of all the tension by taking a nap. Then once I fell asleep, I was awoking by a fire.

The neighbors house had been caught on fire. The bonfire had spread through the window by a tree. It had gotten so high in the sky that it touched a tree. I tried to all the fire department, but the fire had blown our transformer. I was getting ready to run away until I saw 3 kids trapped by the fire. Then I knew what I had to do. I raced through the door just to see the kids parents burned alive. It was hard to see that but then I remembered the kids, so I raced up stairs and busted through the door and I put the kids on my shoulder and carried them out of the house. I felt like a hero until I forgot one. He was screaming to the top of his lungs. So I went up to his room and he was stuck under some wood that had collapsed. It took all of my power to get him out. Then I hear the fire department say to come out and that they were setting out a platform where you jump on. I take the kid and push him out the window to the platform then, the house starts to collapse under my feet. I fall with the house and get buried under the ash and wood. I think I'm dead, then I wake up in the hospital next to my cousins and the 3 kids I rescued. My cousins show me the newspaper saying, "Hero saved 3 kids in fir." On it. At that moment, I actually felt peacful from everything.
