Los Angeles

I woke up to the banging of pots and pans, my little brothers “band practice.” And, the screaming of my mother to stop them because I was sleeping, but not anymore. My mother came bursting into my room, sharing good news of my aunt Lori arriving to L.A. This was the first visit since my 15th birthday. I wasn’t really that excited to see her, but not sure why. She was one of my favorite people in the world, so, why wasn’t I excited to see her?

She walked in the front door, beautiful as ever. Her smile was from ear to ear, until she saw me. I wasn’t smiling, just standing there waiting to give her a fake “I’m so happy you’re here” hug. She walked over to me, but said nothing. No hug, no words, nothing. Then it hit me, I looked down, staring at my big, round belly. Her disappointment hit me like a ton of bricks.

She wouldn't talk to me, wouldn't even sit in the same room as me. Confronting her about would just make matters worse. The only option I had was to go through my mother, and even she wouldn't tell me why. This was striking me odd, because my mother and I shared everything, good or bad. Maybe she was turning into her sister, something that I couldn't handle. Their disappointment pouring over me, I had to get out of there. The only thing I could do was leave and never turn back. Hello New York, goodbye L.A.

  1. I like how you called the noise your brothers were making 'band practice'. I wasn't expecting that the main character was pregnant, I like the twist. :)
